Free Plan vs. Paid Trial: What's the Right Way to Try a SaaS Product?

A 14-day trial with a credit card is very different from a permanently free tier. We explain our approach to pricing and why we offer both so you can choose what works for your business.

The SaaS industry has largely converged on two acquisition models: the free trial and the freemium plan. They look similar from the outside but they work very differently, and for a business evaluating a new platform, the difference matters. zaaum offers both, and this post explains exactly how each works and which one makes sense depending on where you are in your decision.

The problem with most free trials

A typical 14-day free trial gives you full access to the product, requires a credit card on day one, and then charges you automatically when the trial ends. If you forget to cancel, you have paid for a month of a product you may not have finished evaluating. The friction is intentional: vendors know that most people who start a trial do not actively decide to subscribe. They just forget to cancel. This creates revenue, but it also creates frustration and churn.

A related problem is what happens after the trial expires if you do not upgrade. In many SaaS products, your account is locked or your data becomes inaccessible until you enter payment details. This is a pressure tactic, and it is a poor experience for anyone who genuinely wanted to evaluate the product before committing.

The problem with poorly designed free tiers

Freemium plans have their own issues. Many products offer a free tier that is so restricted it barely functions. You cannot actually evaluate whether the product solves your problem because the features you need are all locked behind the paid plan. The free tier exists not to provide value but to create frustration that pushes you toward upgrading.

How zaaum approaches this differently

zaaum offers two separate entry points and they serve different needs.

The always-free plan

The free plan on zaaum is a real, working tier with no time limit and no credit card required. It includes product management, order processing, inventory tracking, and a live public storefront. The limits exist on volume items like the number of products you can list and the number of staff seats, not on core functionality. A business just starting out can run a genuine operation on the free tier and upgrade only when they have outgrown it.

The free plan also serves as a permanent evaluation option. If you want to test whether zaaum fits your workflow before entering any payment information, the free tier lets you do that without any time pressure.

The 14-day paid feature trial

When you sign up for a paid plan, you get a 14-day trial of that plan's full feature set at no charge. A credit card is required to start the trial. You will not be charged during the trial period. At the end of 14 days, your card on file is automatically charged for the first billing cycle unless you cancel before the trial expires. We send reminder emails in advance of the trial ending so you always know where you stand.

This model is appropriate if you already know you need the paid feature set and want time to verify it works for your specific use case before the invoice hits. It is a genuine evaluation window, not a forgetting-to-cancel trap. If you cancel during the 14 days, you are not charged. If you stay, you were already planning to.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose the free plan if you are just getting started, want to verify the platform without financial commitment, or are running a small operation that may fit within the free tier limits long-term.
  • Choose the paid trial if you already know you need features like advanced analytics, custom domains, or additional staff seats and want a full evaluation window before your subscription begins.

You can also start on the free plan and upgrade to a paid plan later. Your data, products, orders, and settings carry over completely. There is no migration involved.

A note on pricing transparency

All of zaaum's plan limits and prices are listed on the pricing page before you sign up. There are no usage-based surprise charges and no features that appear to be included but turn out to require add-ons. What you see during signup is exactly what you get.
